The impulse of the strong to conquer the weak, rather on a national or personal scale, is not a constant throughout all of human history. For thousands of years, humans lived in relative peace in small hunter-gatherer tribes which were relatively egalitarian. Forces like imperialism, capitalism, and nationalism that are overwhelmingly present in the history taught in Western nations make it seem like these forces have been creating conflict all over the globe for all of history, but there are some parts of the world unaffected by these and thus unaffected by the impulse to conquer those weaker than them.
