The poem is told using many writing techniques including foreshadowing, referencing, and symbolism. Foreshadowing is used when Beowulf says, “Death is my errand and the fate they had earned.” Referencing is used when the poem includes the story of Cain and Abel from the bible. The armor, shield, and sword are used to symbolize God’s protection. The graphic novel used many visual techniques. The one I find most effective is the use of perspective. Beowulf is portrayed much larger than any other human in the panels. It is used several times to show how small the people are in comparison to the monster’s lair.
The mood in the panel of the graphic novel seems to be dreary and bleak. The colors used are all grays and blues. The setting shows the men walking through snow which would be more tedious than walking over normal terrain. The faces of the men are lined and very serious.
I think each panel has a slightly different effect on the reader. Some panels such as panel 1 and 2 show you the difference in strength between Beowulf and his men. Other panels , like panel 12 and 18, give the effect of the scale of the task at hand.
